Competition season

Spring is competition season! ONU teams competed in national competitions that pit their engineering expertise against engineering students from across the country. The ONU teams worked hard on their designs, and it showed in their performances.

  • The ONU student chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) captured fourth place at the Human Powered Vehicle Challenge (HPVC) East competition at the University of Central Florida April 11-13. They competed against 32 other teams.
  • The ONU student chapter of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) placed 21st with an airplane called “Northern Comfort” at the SAE Aero Design East Competition in Cummings, Ga., April 11-14. Forty-two teams participated in the weekend competition, including national championship teams from Brazil, Canada, Puerto Rico and Poland.
  • ONU garnered three awards at the 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers regional concrete canoe and steel bridge competition held at the University of Detroit Mercy on March 28-30. The Ohio Northern concrete canoe squad captured the best theme award and, as a team, placed third on design paper and second on oral presentation.
  • The ONU micromouse team captured second place at the Region 2 IEEE-Student Activities Conference hosted by Rowan University in New Jersey on April 5. Region 2 covers Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, southern New Jersey, Ohio (except Toledo), Pennsylvania, northern Virginia, and West Virginia. In a micromouse robotics competition, teams construct an autonomous robotic “mouse” that navigates to the center of a random maze from a specified corner in the shortest amount of time possible.
